Christian Scabs

In my country, council workers have recently voted to take strike action.

Is this a conflict of interests, creating inner turmoil for the believer?

Surely the God of the bible is a CovenantKeepingGod, and so to respect the contract of employment between the employer and the employee is a kingdom value.

Didn't God remind us, in the first instance, of what working conditions we could expect from living under monarchic rule [bible:niv:ot:1sam8]?

Dilemma. Who should I be; striker or scab ?

Difficult one, what to do when under opression? Do you remember the Miners Strike of the 80s and Notts' scabs? I remember Darren Hopewells car got trashed by touring Yorks striking miners. 20 years on, the only working mines in the UK are in Notts not Yorks, the Lord's justice?

i remember seeing arthur scargill on tv, but not much else - i was probably a bit young to appreciate it.

it's a tricky one, i've worshipped in the same church meeting with firefighters from both sides of the picket line.

my mum worked for a union and yet i worked as a contractor when companies were 'working-to-rule' under union command, hence making me like a 3rd-party-scab, and receiving death threats for it.

as for what to do under oppression? its a tricky one. when is it ok to breach a contract or to break the law (of the land)?

the maccabees and zealots might have been looking for political revolution, but that isn’t my interpretation of Jesus’s message of the kingdom of God.

titus taught that, as slaves we should "... be subject to (our) masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that (we) can be fully trusted ..." [bible:niv:nt:tit2]

council workers have the additional bind that the boss is also the state!

" ...submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors ... for it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men ..." [bible:niv:nt:1pet2]
